ACANTHUS:  Acanthus is one of the great architectural plants.  Clump forming with tall spikes of prickly blossoms and large  basal leaves.  These plants need plenty of space and look especially good in a gravel garden.  Plant in full sun and well drained soil.

 

Acanthus caroli-alexandri.  Wide rich green leaves.  Tightly packed flowers which are white, suffused rose in colour, and are held on a spike which will reach 100cm.  July.

A. mollis ‘RUE LEDAN’.  With deeply lobed, dark green leaves it differs from the usual cultivars in that it has white flowers.  1.5m in flower.

A. spinosa ‘Lady Moore’.  Good in partial shade as well as full sun.  The leaves are dark green and deeply divided with spiny points.  Soft, mauve foxglove like flowers are produced in late summer. 60cm.

ACTAEA.  Formerly known as Cimicifuga.  This family of plants give us some of our best garden perennials.  They bloom late in the season with strong vertical spikes of bottlebrush-like flowers and prefer humus-rich, moisture retentive soil in part shade.

 

A. simplex ‘Brunette’.  Always very much admired in our grass garden where it shows itself off very well indeed.  Very dark leaves, almost maroon  and spikes of white, faintly scented, flowers from July to September.  120cm

AGAPANTHUS  These plants, despite their misleading English common name ‘Lily of the Nile’ are in fact native to South Africa.  They like full sun and rich moist soil.  Feed regularly during the growing season with tomato food or some other high potash feed

ASTRANTIA  Given what it likes, Astrantia is one of the most reliable and useful of garden plants.  It flowers non stop from late Spring to early Autumn.  It prefers partial or full shade and moist but well drained soil.  Deadhead regularly for constant reblooming 

 

A. ‘Buckland’  Distinctive soft pink flowers offset by broad white bracts tipped with green.  Flowers are sterile ensuring that A. ‘Buckland’ remains true in cultivation.

BAPTISIA: These plants prefer well drained moisture retentive soil in full sun.  Very good tolerance to poor soil.  Long lived plants that should not be disturbed once established. 

 

B. ‘Purple Smoke’ A very vigorous Baptisia with charcoal green stems when mature, and dozens of giant lupin-like flower heads of dusty purple.  100cm

BERKHEYA  purpurea ‘Zulu Warrior’  A striking thistle which hails from South Africa.  Hardy but needs well drained soil.  Large purplish white 7cm flowers are borne in clusters from June to November.  Leaves are large, silver grey with a cottony white underside.  A must for the gravel garden.  60cm.  Not available until June.

BRUNNERA  These plants grow best in shade and need a rich moist soil which does not dry out in summer.  Blue forget-me-not type flowers are produced from April to June, which are  then followed by large, heart shaped leaves.

 

B. macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’. A very fine plant with dramatic silver leaves which have dark green veins and a dark green margin.  Requires full shade or the leaves will lose their brightness.  40cm

CAMASSIA  These summer flowering bulbs from North America have clusters of long narrow leaves and long racemes of star shaped flowers.  They require fairly moist soil which does not become waterlogged.  Flowers last longest in some shade.

CLEMATIS   We do not grow any climbing Clematis, just herbaceous varieties suitable for the border.  These can be cut to the ground each winter and are excellent for scrambling through shrubs or for covering a bank.  Once established they tolerate dry soil and will grow in sun or part shade.
